Calrec Brings the Thunder to Dome

Hebden Bridge, UK (July 1, 2009)--Thunder, a new HD production truck built by Dome Productions as part of the company's commitment to the 2010Vancouver Olympics, includes a 64-fader Calrec Sigma audio console.

Thunder hit the road in May to cover Major League Baseball in Dome's hometown of Toronto before heading south to Atlanta and Baltimore for more baseball. "The launch was very successful. We've had great feedback on the truck and on its audio room," said Mike Johnson of Dome Productions. "It sets up nicely, and everybody loves to see the familiar platform. We've looked at other consoles, but Calrec's performance, capabilities, and outstanding support mean it's still the best solution for us."

With Thunder, Dome took advantage of the Sigma console's optional I/O expansion to implement a MADI (multichannel audio digital interface) as a key element in the core signal distribution within the truck, greatly simplifying signal routing and reducing the number of cables, while lowering overall weight and improving efficiency and air flow.

Sigma incorporates Calrec's own Bluefin high-density signal processing (HDSP), which packs the power and flexibility to configure complex shows into a compact footprint. Reliable and intuitive to use, Sigma is based on Calrec's highly scalable Alpha operating platform. Built in are 320 channel processing paths, which can be configured for up to 52 full 5.1 surround channels.

Like the Alpha's, Sigma's buss structure includes 20 auxiliaries and 48 tracks. The system also provides more than 19 minutes of delay made up of 432 mono elements of up to 2.73 seconds that can be inserted in multiple places on the signal paths to compensate for synchronization problems inherent in mixed-format HD/SD production.

Built by Dome's own field shop in Toronto in partnership with systems integrator AZCAR Technologies, Thunder is a front-line truck whose assignments will also include Stanley Cup coverage for the National Hockey League, Canadian Football League games, ESPN sports, and concerts.
