Genex Performs at Los Angeles Opera

Santa Monica, CA(October 8, 2003)--Genex Audio recently supplied a pair of GX9048 Multi-Format Digital Multitrack systems to the prestigious Los Angeles Opera to record opening-season productions that were also captured to HDTV video. The timecode-interlocked high-definition sound recordings will be remixed to 5.1-channel surround sound for a planned series of DVD releases.

The LA Opera's head of recording and music producer on the current project was Fred Vogler. He reports that the Genex GX9048 systems "performed flawlessly during the initial recordings of Hector Belioz' La Damnation de Faust and Nicholas and Alexandra." There are plans to record all nine performances of LA Opera's current season to Genex 24-bit/96 kHz format.

"What appeals to me most about the Genex GX9048--aside from the outstanding 24/96 sonic quality--is the fact that we could record continuously for more that 90 minutes across our 40-track system," Vogler reports. "With other tape-based and hard disk recorders, we would have to hook up several machines and then back up multiple drives. This way, we simply swap out high-capacity hard drives and we have each act of the operas on a single drive. It's definitely more time- and media-efficient." Assisting Vogler on the LA Opera sessions were engineers Scott Sedillo and Tim Boot.

Multiple performances of La Damnation de Faust and the world premier of Nicholas and Alexandra--the latter starring the LA Opera's Music Director Placido Domingo in the role of Rasputin--were videotaped in HDTV format by Modern Videofilm, a Los Angeles-based company that has also provided private funding to the LA Opera.
