Rydstrom to Receive CAS Career Achievement Award

Los Angeles (October 20, 2003)--Seven-time Oscar-winning re-recording mixer and sound designer Gary Rydstrom, CAS, will receive the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) 2004 Career Achievement Award, it was announced by CAS president, Richard Lightstone. The presentation will be made at the organization's 40th Anniversary Awards Banquet Saturday, February 21, 2004, in the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel.

"Gary has made significant contributions to the professional standards of movie sound," said Lightstone. "He has amassed an extraordinary body of work."

Rydstrom has earned seven Academy Awards, four for Best Sound and three for Best Sound Editing, out of a total of 11 nominations. He has also received two CAS Awards and two British Academy Awards. His Best Sound Oscars were for Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Titanic and Saving Private Ryan. His Best Sound Editing Oscars were for Terminator 2, Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan.

Rydstrom, who recently joined Pixar from Skywalker Sound, becomes the 22nd CAS Career Achievement honoree. Last year's recipient was Charles Wilborn, CAS.

Lightstone points out that the Biltmore Hotel was selected as this year's site for the awards because of its history with the Oscars. It was in the Crystal Room in 1927 that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was formed and the design for the Oscar statuette was sketched on a linen napkin. The awards were presented there in 1931, 1935, 1939, 1941, 1942 and again in 1977.
